Merit Scholarships: Are you elegible?

Merit-based scholarships are a good way for students to fund their education without relying on student loans or other financial aid forms.

These scholarships look for achievements like exceptional grades, athletic ability, or outstanding artistic talent. Unlike need-based financial aid, merit scholarships do not usually account for financial needs as assessed through the FAFSA or CSS Profile.

Are you eligible?

To determine your eligibility, you first need to consider the specific criteria set by the scholarship organization. However, they usually evaluate applicants based on the following criteria:

  • High school transcript, including grades and the rigor of your high school classes.

  • Standardized test scores on the ACT or SAT.

  • Essays.

  • Letters of recommendation.

  • Involvement in clubs, sports, community service, or other activities.

  • Awards and honors.

  • Personal statement

What is a good GPA for a merit-based scholarship?

It depends on the scholarship provider's GPA requirements. Some may consider factors such as test scores, extracurricular activities, or essays to a greater extent than GPA. Therefore, it is advisable to focus on your strong areas when applying for scholarships. If your GPA is high, such as 4.0 or close to it, it would be better to apply for scholarships that prioritize academic achievements. On the other hand, if you excel in other areas, you may want to consider scholarships that recognize your strengths.

Who provides this kind of scholarship?

Colleges and universities

Numerous higher education institutions provide this kind of award, with varying programs and requirements. While some institutions automatically consider all students, others may require additional applications.

Member Organizations

Organizations like the National Association of Flavors and Food-Ingredient Systems (NAFFS), Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), The Boy Scouts of America, and The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) provide scholarships to students.

Private Companies

Companies like Coca-Cola, Burger King, Google, and more have annual scholarships. Like many other scholarship opportunities, the application requirements and eligibility criteria will vary based on the company.

National Merit Scholarship Corporation

To participate in the National Merit Scholarship Program, students must take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) in their junior year of high school. The highest-scoring students on the test are then designated as semifinalists, and they have the opportunity to continue in the competition by submitting a detailed application, demonstrating their academic record, extracurricular activities, leadership, and community involvement.
