Temporary Pause on U.S. Student Visa Interviews: What You Need to Know

If you’re planning to study in the United States, you may have already heard that the U.S. State Department has instructed all embassies and consulates to temporarily pause the scheduling of student visa interviews. This affects international students applying for F, M, and J visas.

While no official timeline has been confirmed, the State Department has said that more information will be released in the coming days.

Why is this happening?

This temporary pause is due to an update in the visa vetting policy, which aims to strengthen the review process for new applicants. Though unexpected, such adjustments are not uncommon, especially during high-volume periods like the lead-up to Fall 2025 admissions.

What should current and prospective students do?

  • If you already have a visa appointment scheduled, keep it unless the consulate notifies you otherwise.

  • If you’re waiting to schedule an appointment, keep checking with the consular post regularly for new availability.

  • Once the updated process is in place, the State Department is expected to open more appointment slots, allowing students to apply in time for Fall 2025.
